A key program of the Georgia Medical Center Authority is the creation of BioBusiness Centers to serve as business accelerators for established,
start-up life sciences companies.

The Georgia Medical Center Authority conceptualized the creation of business accelerator facilities in 2005 as a result of strong demand for space by post-incubator and start-up entrepreneurs in the Life Sciences industry (medical device, bioinformatics, medical software, telemedicine, and biotech).

The Augusta BioBusiness Center (ABBC)
, the authority’s flagship business accelerator facility, is located in historic, downtown Augusta, Georgia. This 17,000 sqft facility, which features wet and dry laboratories and offices, currently hosts three life sciences companies, two of which were “born” at the Medical College of Georgia.

The three GMCA sponsored companies (REACH Call, HealthTronics Laboratory Solutions, and Integrated Science Systems) save countless lives via remote, emergency stroke detection and treatment; accurate and rapid diagnoses of prostate and bladder cancers; and preventing the spread of infectious diseases, respectively.

Since the Augusta BioBusiness Center opened in 2007, the three companies have:
  • Nearly doubled their annual revenues to $8.2 Million;
  • Created 45 full-time positions;
  • Increased average salaries to $70,000;
  • Delivered medically innovative products and services to hospitals, laboratories, and medical offices in nearly 50 Georgia Counties and throughout the USA and Canada.
